Six months ago, Afaan Oromo content represented 8% of total content on AdwaTimes. Today it is 27% — a 340% increase driven by a combination of creator growth, improved subtitle accuracy, and targeted outreach to the Oromo diaspora community.

Why Now?

Several factors converged in early 2026:

1. Improved Subtitle Accuracy

Our July 2026 model update brought Afaan Oromo subtitle accuracy from 71% to 94%. Before this, many Oromo creators avoided AdwaTimes because the subtitles were unreliable — embarrassing for creators whose content depends on precise language.

2. Oromo Creator Fund

AdwaTimes allocated a dedicated 500,000 ETB Creator Fund specifically for Afaan Oromo content in Q1 2026, providing grants of 10,000–50,000 ETB to creators with over 1,000 subscribers who committed to publishing at least 8 videos per month.

3. Community-Led Growth

The Oromo diaspora community in Minneapolis, Toronto, and Melbourne began actively sharing AdwaTimes content on community WhatsApp groups and Facebook pages. Organic word-of-mouth drove a 180% spike in Oromo-speaking new registrations in March 2026.

Chaltu Gemechu — Educational content about Oromo history and culture. 45,000 subscribers, based in Addis Ababa. "AdwaTimes is the first platform that treats Afaan Oromo as a first-class language, not an afterthought."

Dagne Wakjira — Oromo music and cultural programming. 92,000 subscribers, based in Minneapolis. "My diaspora audience found me here. They couldn't find Afaan Oromo content like mine anywhere else."

Falmata Hussein — Comedy and lifestyle content in Afaan Oromo. 28,000 subscribers, based in Toronto. "The subtitle system means my parents in Jimma and my cousins in Oslo can both watch my content."
